TWENTY-FIVE

Maise pedaled the last thirty yards along her street beneath the burning sun, using the last of her energy to reach the Buckley’s house. The air was breathtaking—literally—she had underestimated just how much the heat would affect her having to ride all the way down to the town center and back. She would never take a car for granted again.

It had been such an eventful morning, she was glad to make it home. No doubt, Mark would remind her of the risk, but she had also found out some important information. Although not without its challenges, her Uncle and the police department were working hard to secure the town. Though, they were no closer to knowing how quickly things would be back to normal. And finally, after helping Mrs. Wood to the Whittlesea Medical Clinic and redeeming herself partly for not checking on Mrs. Buckley yesterday, she’d discovered the military had finally arrived to help.

Maise laid her bicycle on Mr. Buckley’s scruffy lawn beside the pathway and walked to the front door, where she tapped on the frosted glass three times. She was about to try the knob to see if it was locked when it turned and the door swung open. Mr. Buckley stood leaning against it, his thin frame covered in brown pants and a striped polo shirt.

“Hello, Maise,” he croaked. The misery in his voice broke her heart.

“Hi, Mr. Buckley. How are you feeling? I’m glad to see you’re up and about again.”

“Yes. I’m all right. Hanging in there,” he said.

Maise gave a pained smile. “I wanted to let you know I’d been down to the police station.”

“Thank you. Thank you very much.”

“The police and the ambulance will be here as soon as they can. Probably later today.”

“That will be a relief. I hate leaving her there in the heat. Her body is starting to feel the effects.”

Maise wished she could do more. There was nowhere to keep the body cold. “I’m sorry I can’t help.”

“You’ve done enough, dear girl.”

With a thin smile, Maise said, “You’re not too hot in here?”

“I’ve got all the windows open and I’m keeping a wet towel on my forehead. That seems to be helping. And you know you feel the cold more as you get older so the warmth is not so bad. For me, anyway.”

“You’ve got enough water?”

“For now, yes.”

“If you need anything, let me know,” Maise said. “Even just call out over the back fence.”

Mr. Buckley thanked her and Maise left. She was keen to find out what Mark had been doing and update him on what she’d discovered. She was surprised, having taken so long, that he hadn’t come looking for her.

She heard Mindy barking and raised voices as she walked up the driveway of their property. The garage door was locked, so she entered through the front and not willing to leave her bike outside, leaned it against the wall in the foyer, then walked through the house towards the rear. It sounded as though people were having an argument in the backyard.
